Mission

To conduct research and development of novel technologies for the management and interpretation of scientific information.

Research Tracks

1. Data and Text Mining:

It is a field that aims at discovering “useful and previously unknown ‘gems’ of information in large text amounts” thus trying to maximize the benefits of increased textual availability. Examples of applications include security, biomedical applications, on-line media, sentiment analysis, marketing applications and academic applications, among others.

2. Bioinformatics:

It is an interdisciplinary field joining the field of Biology and Computer Science. Bioinformatics is concerned with the organization and analysis of biological data. For molecular biologists, Bioinformatics is the practice of using software tools to analyze biological data to extract new data, generate a new hypothesis, or search for effective molecules. NUBHIOS (Nile University Bioinformatics Server).

3. Medical Imaging and Image Processing:

It focuses on the development of imaging devices to reveal different aspects of the tissue and organs based on different physical properties of tissue.  This includes the ability to block x-ray (radiography and CT), the magnetic properties of tissue (MRI), the absorption and incorporation of isotopes (nuclear imaging, SPECT and PET), the mechanical property and its interaction with the propagating sonic waves (ultrasound), and other novel modalities. The implementation of these technologies is manifested in the number of modalities that are currently being used: CT, MRU, US, SPECT, PET, etc.

4. Ubiquitous and Visual Computing:

extends conventional human-computer interaction paradigms to small computing devices that are wirelessly connected and unobtrusively embedded in objects and environments. It focuses on security/surveillance, proactive healthcare delivery, and safety and environmental monitoring applications. The activities of Ubiquitous and Visual Computing group are based on competencies from a broad spectrum of research areas including wireless sensor networks, embedded systems, computer vision, computer graphics and machine intelligence.

5. Medical Informatics:

Medical informatics is the intersection of information science, computer science, and healthcare. This field deals with the technologies, devices, and resources needed to optimize the acquisition, storage, retrieval, and use of information in healthcare. This group works on developing methods and technologies for the acquisition, processing, and study of multi-modal patient data. Potential data sources include electronic health records, diagnostic test results, medical scans, medical observations, among others.

6. Cybersecurity:

It is the practice of protecting critical systems and sensitive information from information disclosure, theft of or damage to their hardware, software, or electronic data, as well as from the disruption or misdirection of the services they provide. This group works on latest technologies for malware detection, digital forensics and protection of networks against digital attacks.

7. Software and Systems:

System software is a type of computer program that is designed to run a computer's hardware and application programs. Such software is designed to provide a platform for other software. Examples of system software include operating systems, computational science software, game engines, search engines, industrial automation, and software as a service application. This group looks into the different components of software systems with a focus on mobile platforms and program conversion to native applications.

Additional research activities: current research thrusts include - in addition to the areas listed above - Brain Computer Interface, Cloud Computing, Study of Spinal Cord Motor Neurons Activity, and Virtual Environments for Serious Computer Gaming.
